Most tribes revere the Native American bear. But what is its significance among Native Americans? And why is it so important?
As with all Native American totem animals, the cultural view of the bear varies from one Indian tribe to another, but at its core, the Indian bear represents authority, good medicine, courage, and strength. It is said that the Native American bear is a healer and a protector, much like a mother bear protecting her cubs.
“Native American chiefs who belong to the bear clan defend what is right and fight for what is good and true.”

Indian Brown and Black Bear
Plantigrade
like humans, there are at least 8 species of bears, but in North America, the “American” black bear and the brown bear [the Native American bear] reign supreme. The main difference between these bears is their size. The Indian black bear weighs between 200 and 600 pounds and measures between 1.5 and 2.5 meters. Although called a “black” bear, the American bear varies in color depending on its habitat.
It is mainly found in the forests of the Western states, but it also lives in Mexico and Canada. Like its relative the grizzly
, it is omnivorous and eats almost anything, including trash. Often, people consider the Indian black bear a docile animal, but “black bears are powerful predators and, in some regions, they… kill moose calves and deer fawns.” Every year, attacks by Indian black bears on humans are reported, but they generally prefer to avoid people.

Brown bears [Native American grizzlies] are enormous. Their average size is 8 feet and their weight is nearly 900 pounds. Its cousin, the Native American Kodiak bear, the largest land carnivore, measures 2.5 meters and weighs nearly a ton! The Kodiak bear only lives on the Kodiak Islands in Alaska. The Native American grizzly and the Kodiak are also omnivorous. They eat berries, roots, plant shoots, rodents, and baby calves. Both brown and black bears are excellent “fishermen” and can run at speeds of up to 48 kilometers per hour.
“Grizzlies remain numerous in Alaska and Canada, where they continue to be highly prized as big game. In the continental United States, however, fewer than 1,000 remain, and they are protected by law.”
Like the Indian black bear, the grizzly tries to avoid people, but if caught by surprise or if protecting a Native American cub, it may attack!

The Native American Legend of the Bear
Originally, the Native American bear roamed the Great Plains, living in the forested and open areas of western North America. The presence of the Indian bear in the plains spiritually connects it to Native American peoples.
Almost all tribes give the Native American bear an important place in their culture. Bears are symbols of wisdom: they are often portrayed as guardians, teachers, chiefs, and healers in the origin stories, myths, and legends of Native Americans.
Known for their ability to keep fighting even when wounded, bears are closely linked to healing and medicine. Many believed that Native American bears were capable of healing their own wounds. An Indian bear claw could be worn as a necklace or in bracelets to protect a warrior and give him strength.

The Native American bear has its own clan, just like the turtle, the Indian wolf, and the elk.
Members of the Native American totem bear clan are known as healers and experts in the field: bitter root, bear root, flat cedar, sage, and many others.
Although each tribe has its own clan responsibilities, the significance of the Native American bear as a defender and protector is central to most Native American cultures.
Native American Grizzly Symbol
Native Americans were a deeply spiritual people who communicated their history, thoughts, ideas, and dreams from generation to generation through symbols and signs, such as the Native American bear symbol. Most Native American symbols were geometric representations of celestial bodies, natural phenomena, and animal drawings.

Animals were drawn as symbols considered to be spiritual guides or totem animals, dictating the qualities and traits of the animal the symbol represented. Among these signs, the bear symbol was very important, as it represented a protector and guardian, symbolizing courage, physical strength, and leadership. Some well-known Indian tribes even had two great Native American warriors known as Grizzly. These soldiers were the first to charge enemies in battle.
Some Native Americans believed it was possible to draw power from a Native American bear by dreaming of it, killing it, and eating a part of it, or even just touching it. These actions made a warrior invincible. They also believed that the Indian bear had spiritual power, and if they wore a necklace of Native American bear claws, it meant protection and good health for the Native American.
“According to Abenaki mythology, the Great Bear is chased every night by three hunters. The Great Bear is killed every autumn and its blood spills onto the earth, turning the leaves brown, but it is reborn every spring.”
Finally, the Native American bear symbol appears in all Native American cultures and reminds indigenous Americans to protect their way of life, fight for what is right, and restore balance in their communities.

Native American Totem Bear
In the realm of Indian totem animals, the Native American bear is emblematic of grounding forces and strength. This animal has been revered throughout time as a powerful Native American totem, inspiring those in need with the courage to face adversity. As a spirit animal in touch with the earth and the cycles of nature, it is a powerful guide for supporting physical and emotional healing.
1- Meaning of the Native American Totem Bear:
The Native American bear has several meanings that will inspire those who have this animal as a totem:
- The primary meaning of the bear spirit animal is strength and confidence.
- Standing up against adversity: taking action and leading
- The spirit of the bear indicates that it is time to heal or use your healing abilities to help yourself or others.
- Bear medicine emphasizes the importance of solitude, calm, and rest.
- The spirit of the bear provides strong grounding forces.

The Grizzly in Native American Mythology:
In Native American culture, there are several legends telling of the daughter of a famous Indian chief who was abducted by a bear. The high-ranking woman had gone out into the woods to pick berries and stepped on Native American bear droppings and began speaking loudly, insulting their cleanliness.
Two Native American Grizzlies nearby heard her and decided they would not tolerate such insolence. They felt this disrespectful Native American woman should be punished.
To do so, a bear transformed into a very handsome man who approached the woman and lured her seductively to accompany him to his mountain home.
She then fell in love with him and became part-bear herself.

She then married him and had twin cubs. Their children were born as small bear-like creatures who could shapeshift into human form like their father. The Native American princess’s brothers eventually found her and, in an uneven fight, killed her husband. They returned to the village, but the two bear sons did not feel comfortable and eventually left to return to the forest.
“All members of the bear clan are descended from this woman and her two sons.”
What does it mean to dream of a bear?
Dreams are communications from our subconscious that use the language of symbols. Dreaming of a Native American bear (or any bear) symbolizes power, strength, and protection for yourself or possibly your family. If the Indian bear in your dream is hibernating, it may indicate a need for solitude and escape.
If the bear is dancing, it means you are lucky (or that you are having flashbacks to one of the many “Grateful Dead” shows you attended).
If an Indian bear is chasing you, it may mean that you are avoiding an important situation in your life and it is time to take a stand and face it. The appearance of a bear in your dream can also be a message that it is time to show your power to the world.
