Native American feather headdresses were not reserved for common people, but for Native American chiefs and heroes (Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, etc.). While Native American feather headdresses are perhaps the most well-known, they were not the only ones used by Indian tribes.

Native American headdresses are the feather headdresses commonly seen in Western movies and festivals. The Indian headdress is one of the most well-known traditional headpieces today, even though they were only worn by a dozen tribes in the Great Plains region, such as the Sioux, the Lakotas, and the Cheyennes.

Among important Native American ceremonial regalia, the Indian headdress was worn only by chiefs and warriors. Therefore, only men could wear Indian headdresses. In combat, Indians could not wear their headdresses, but they kept them for official occasions. In particular, long feathered Native American headdresses were never worn on the battlefield. It would be impossible to fight while wearing one.
It is partly due to the nomadic life of Native American tribes that they were forced to adopt the customs of their new neighbors. In most cases, the meaning of the Native American headdress differs among the new tribes that adopted it. The band can be adorned with beadwork or natural leather. The feathers of the headdress generally come from a bird 🐤 found on the ground, native to the region of the tribe making the headdress. The feathers are held together with leather thread or rawhide and can be designed in different ways depending on the look the artist wishes to give the headpiece. It is important to note that there are actually many types of headdresses that have different styles and come from different regions of Turtle Island.🐢
It is believed that the Sioux were among the first tribes to wear the Native American Indian headdress.
2) Native American Buffalo Headdress (Indian horned headdress)
Like feathered Indian headdresses, buffalo horn headdresses were the traditional regalia of certain Indian warriors. These are buffalo hide headpieces to which a pair of buffalo horns were attached, often decorated with fur and a buffalo tail trailing behind. Generally, the Native American horned headdress had ermine skins and war feathers attached.
Only distinguished men who have performed an act of heroism can wear them.
Indian horned headdresses were one of the rarest types, as they were less known (only the Sioux and other Great Plains tribes wore them) and, like any other respectable headdress, only warriors who had performed specific deeds wore bison horns.
With all these headdresses having a relationship with wildlife, it can be said that animal totems are important in indigenous culture.
3) Indian headband with feathers
The Indian headband with feathers is very popular in Native American movies. However, this style of Native American headdress is used by a few tribes from the northeast woodlands.
This headpiece generally consisted of a strip of deerskin. This headband was then tied around the forehead with one or two feathers inserted at the back. Eagle feathers 🦅 were common, but other feathers could also be used for these woodland Indian headbands.
Unlike many Native American headdresses presented on this page, this type of headband can be worn by both men and women because they were not associated with war. The number and type of feathers had no relation to heroism or bravery.

4) Native American basket hat
Native American “basket hats” (also called woven caps or basketry hats) were the most common type of Native American headwear west of the Rocky Mountains. Clans differed in the making of Native American basket hats by their styles. California Indian tribes were generally known for their small, rounded or fez-shaped basket hats made from tightly coiled sumac.
Northwest Coast tribes, such as the Haidas and the Salish, often made larger, more conical or brimmed hats from fibers such as cedar bark or spruce root.
In California, Native American basket hats were normally worn only by women and young girls, and their patterns were mostly decorative. On the Northwest Coast, people wore Native American basket hats for ceremonial and dance purposes, as well as in daily life. The patterns of Northwest Coast basketry hats often conveyed information about a person’s clan, achievements, or status within the tribe.
5) Indian Roach Headdress
Indian Roach headdresses (also called porcupine roaches or artificial roaches) were the most widely used type of Native American headdress in the United States.
Native American tribes east of the Rocky Mountains were known for wearing the Indian roach headdress. These indigenous headpieces are made of stiff animal hair.
Warriors and dancers generally wore Indian roach headdresses. Like war boots, these headdresses are part of Native American traditions. Their use differs from one tribe to another. In many tribes, roaches were worn in combat, while tribal headdresses were worn more during ceremonies.
WHO WOULD WEAR AN INDIAN HEADDRESS?
Only people admired and respected by other members of the tribe wear a headdress, as its symbol represents bravery and honor – a distinguished member of the community such as a chief, a warrior, or a person honored for something wears the headdress. It was once common for a headdress to be worn during battles as well as among the Native Americans of Canada and the United States.
Today, it is very likely that a headdress will be worn during a traditional indigenous wedding ceremony, a music festival, or another ceremony like a pow wow… 💃 There are many types of headdresses that have different styles and meanings, but one similarity among them all is that they must be earned to be worn.
Both men and women can wear a headdress – the only difference is that some men wear an Indian headdress and women wear a beaded headband.
